What Customers Say About Black & Decker RTX-1 2 Amp 8,000 to 30,000 RPM Variable Speed Rotary Tool with 55 Accessories:

The tool worked great for 4 years and then it was replaced for free. Somone at Black and Decker soon answered the phone, but told me that the tool only had a 2 year warranty. About two weeks went by and I received a brand new RTX. She checked, and said I was correct.

I bought this tool 4 years ago because it was recommended, and on sale. I'd say Black and Decker has pretty good customer service. The new ones do only have a two year warranty. The bearings finally went out and the shaft started to wobble extremely, making the tool suddenly and completely unusable.

She offered to send me a return postage label, which I got a few days later. At least by my experience. My first instinct was to take it apart, but instead I got the owners manual, which I'd saved, and discovered that it had a five year warranty, it also gave a number to call. I told her that my owners manual didn't agree.

I don't think a need to expound on that. The RTX was a waste of money-I'm seriously re-considering ever buying Black & Decker anything ever again. "Customer Service" reeks. Next the motor on the RTX started "stuttering" at high RPM's. I'm saving for a Dremel. Plus the tool overheats if used for more that twenty minutes or so. I got this tool from my wife last Christmas.

I would have returned it but smashed it out of frustration. Someone needs to teach them that the key to they're jobs is.you guessed it, service. I wanted a Dremel-type tool to do household projects and minor repairs. That was six months ago. There's a reason they've been around for decades-they work. The wand tool crapped out within a month, bursting through the shaft and cutting my arm.

It would sometimes stop all together.

Mine is worn out on the inside and it is difficult to tighten. For most accessories this works fine, but the Dremel chucks are threaded differently than B&D and they are NOT interchangeable. My B&D has performed flawlessly for a couple of years. All the dealers I've been to, even those who sell B&D tools, only sell Dremel accessories. For that reason alone I would not get a B&D. I have used it to cut all kinds of stuff. My only problem is when trying to get a new chuck.

I have never received a response to either of the two inquiries that I made. For those of you that aren't aware of what that is, it is a metal spring loaded pin that stops the chuck from rotating when changing and removing drills, bits, etc. I contacted the retailer of the unit who told me that I had must have "abused" the unit and they refused to accept the return. This would seem to me to be both a major design flaw and something that could be easily and inexpensively remedied in future units.

I bought this to do some tile and wood work around the house. What I thought would be a nice tool for the price turned into a lemon very quickly. I have attempted to contact Black and Decker directly via their customer service contact form on their web site to no avail. During the first two uses of this tool I was quite happy with what I was able to accomplish with it.

The plastic had given way and now the chuck lock has been rendered useless. This is the last Black and Decker tool I'll ever buy. However, on only my third use the chuck lock jammed. What I discovered is that this pin, while engaging the metal of the chuck is stabilized by the plastic housing of the unit.

But in terms of cutting and and de-rusting, it's not that great of a use. Granted, the tool did come in handy at times, and so it was not a complete waste. I'm by no means a person who has any familiarity with power tools, but one day I decided that it would be useful to get a rotary tool to deal with certain things around the house. At one point I was making chainmail, and tried using the tool to cut the rings of, but the so-called heavy duty cut-off disks either blew apart or rapidly ground down too next to nothing. It does seem to have more than adequate power, and fortunately my tool has worked fine since I bought it. Perhaps my expectations were a little high, but once I started using this tool, I realized that it had very limited potential. It works well enough for sanding, so long as the part to be sanded is in the open and unobstructed.
